No Shame In Her Game

I'm in a conundrum about this book. This book is set in a purely made up world where most of the people haven't seen people of different races. They know they exist but don't seem to have much interaction with them. It's not placed in current day or have anything really to do with our reality. Yet the main character of this story is a black woman and the author is white. To me there doesn't seem to be a disrespectful feel to the story since her being black doesn't really affect the story. It's definitely something that is brought up but it's not like...a main plot point. Hence my issue since as a POC myself, I want to see black authors succeed writing stories that feel authentic. If we ok people who aren't POC to write books with POC main characters will that super saturate the genre with unauthentic stories? Therein lies my problem. I still enjoyed this book but it could definitely be problematic. With that being said let's get into the review.
This book stars Jaeda as our main character who is a prostitute who lives in a town called Kurkevy. This town gets taken over by the mage of lust, Xel and his catalyst Treb. Every town that they enter, they have to have a chosen who becomes the alter for the mage to receive sacrifices. It works out in her favor that he happened to be the one who conquered the city that she was actually captured in. She gets selected to be Xel's Chosen for this town. What started out as only something physical and with the purpose of fueling Xel, then becomes a friendship that develops into more. Because Jaeda values more than just her body and can separate love from sex she ends up being the perfect companion to Xel and Treb. They all slowly fall for each other, until the realize that Jaeda unknowingly has power herself. As the first identified female mage, they then have to figure out what fuels her. Each mage is fueled by an emotion and they learn that her emotion is compassion. She slowly but surely begins to learn how to use her power thanks to Xel. In return she promises to save him from a bond that has prevented him from truly loving others like he wants.
This is definitely a story about taking back your power. Jaeda does it with her body and she in turn helps Xel get his back from the mage who essentially enslaved him. It is amazing and beautiful. Despite the hang ups I had regarding the author I was still able to enjoy this book. My only draw back on it was how long it took for it to end. It definitely feels like it was dragged out longer than necessary near the end. The beginning was good. This is a trilogy so there are 2 more books in this series. I have already downloaded the second book and look forward to what else happens with Jaeda and her Harem of men.
I give this book a 3 out of 5 overall and a 4 out of 5 for the spice. There is a Lust mage and our main character is a prostitute so yeah...there's a ton of sex in this book. Some of it is super hot and other times it felt like filler and I was ready for it to be over (still read it tho).
