The Serpent and The Wings of Night - Review

This book was so much better than I thought it was going to be! I'm not sure what I was expecting but it wasn't a story that was able to capture the complex relationships that we have with people in our lives. They can be morally bad and yet we still can care about them. They can truly so evil things and not care about anyone but us and SHOW us this and we still love them. This was never clearer than when I was reading this story. Oraya was the human daughter of the vampire king, who had to learn how to survive in a world that saw her as weak and as prey. Her father encouraged this and wanted her to enter a trial that would end with her getting the power she needed to no longer be weak. In a world as savage as the one that they live in, I can understand why they both were looking to do this. Despite the fact that Oraya is at a HUGE disadvantage here and has a high chance of death. We see how much she has to battle with everything while in the trials...including her heart. We meet Raihn and his buddy Mische, when Oraya enters the trials and unlike the other vampires they seem to be a ray of light. Even though Oraya harbors a lot of bias about vampires that aren't her father, she manages to get to know these two and kinda let them in. Everything begins to fall apart though after the second challenge throws her to the area where she was born and she begins to notice that everything isn't all well and good with daddy dearest. Her belief system begins to get rocked and everything she thought she knew is changing rapidly. There is a lot of death and loss in this story but unfortunately for Oraya and some others, they don't get the chance to sit and go through the grief. The ending of this book had a twist that I honestly, didn't see coming but works out kind of well actually. If things are able to resolve themselves in some way in the next book then this can get really interesting for the world as a whole.

The spice in this book was nice. Even though there was only one scene, the build up to us getting to where we were made it amazing. I give it a 3 out of 5 for spice. Overall I really liked this book because, the dynamics that are shown in this book are amazing. With Oraya feeling so apart from everyone due to be raised with a vampires mindset yet having to deal with it through the lens of her humanity. To her having to reconcile with the fact that she was falling for a vampire while also developing hate for the man who raised her. To the complex situation that happens at the end of this book. It is just a really great read. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys vampire romance, complex dynamics and fantasy romance. I want to lay some predictions down so just now that if you read beyond this point...you will be spoiled. I think that in the next book, Oraya and Raihn are going to be able to reconcile with each other and then have to find a way to get the Bloodborn out of the House of Night and back to where they belong. Along with that they will have to deal with bringing the House of Night together. I can't wait to see how all of this gets handled. I can also really enjoy my SE's of this book that much more now that I have read the story and have some context for the art. Definitely pick this book up!
