When He's Dark - Review

This book was interesting. This book seems to be apart of separate series that have characters appear from the previous series. This of course means that there were certain points where I felt a little like there was history that I was missing. I jumped into this thinking that it was just a new series that could stand alone. There was definitely some easter eggs in here for readers who have read the previous books from the Mercury pack series. I think I might go back and read those just to see how we met some of these characters in that series. As for this one, we are following Bree and Alex as they try to make a go of a relationship that just about everyone else could see happening from a mile away. What made their relationship interesting is that these two have no only known each other for a long time but they both also have fated mates already. Though there are extenuating circumstances for the both of them for why they aren't with those mates. Things get really crazy when everyone starts going after Bree. Some of them wanting to know if she was in contact with her fated mate while others just plain were upset with her due to the situation with said fated mate. Including the family of her fated mate! I won't spoil exactly what the deal is with him but man does he have some interesting immediate family! Alex also is a character with some interesting family dynamics! I really enjoyed getting to meet his uncles and seeing how they interact with his father. I would definitely read a side story about them!

Bree is also dealing with the fact that she has a strong omega wolf. Now normally, omega wolves are seen as weak in the stories I've read but here, she is very strong and has great emotional powers. So with this comes issues with another omega who believes that she should be the leader of the omegas when her wolf just isn't strong enough for that to be a thing. This leads to all kinds of other issues for Bree and kind of the rest of the pack. I'll just say that this leads itself to a very interesting conclusion that I honestly almost didn't see coming.

As for the spice, this book was packing it *see what I did there*. I mean it was spicy and Alex and Bree definitely held nothing back! Strong 4 out of 5 for the spice. Overall, I gave this book a 3 out of 5. I enjoyed the story and interaction between Bree and Alex. Getting to know the members of the pack and their eccentric ways. The fact that the alpha and no one else could figure out some of the things that was going on behind the scenes was a little concerning. It definitely did not lead you to believe that there were competent people in the pack. Also the fact that this is the first book in the series, the fact that it felt like more of a continuation was not the best. There are some references that I feel like would be better appreciated if you read the previous series first. It makes you feel like you're missing out. I think if they were more subtle then I would have felt better about them being there, but it was entire characters and moments that were called back to that I have no idea about. I don't believe in the blurb it said anything about needing to read the previous series to read this one. Which I guess you fully don't need to but the moments make you wish you did. This didn't affect my rating on the book of course since it's probably more of a personal preference thing. I would still recommend this book to anyone who enjoys contemporary shifter romance.
