What Lies Within Masks and Shadows - Review

This book was a struggle to get through. I really enjoyed what was going on with the story but it just felt like there was so many unnecessary pages that I had to slug through. The FMC continued to waffle and really made me want to shake her because ma'am the way that you were ok with something one second and now it's a problem is insane. I really wanted her to be able to get over the situation with her ex-fiance. I feel like there is something else at play there with how that situation is playing out. Another thing that was kind of meh for me, was the fact that Alora was said to have fighting skills and even after months fighting and training with the Dragons, she still seems like a damsel in distress when it comes to getting into fights. I feel like her and Garrick have the potential to be THE power couple. Though if she can't seem to fight without using her power though then what even is the point? She uses these skills against Garrick (even though she loses) yet she can't muster even half of this ability against others when it matters. That's a little frustrating for me. Even though it was a slug fest to get through, I still am invested in what is going on in this series. I want to know more about the characters involved. There is a lot of moving parts and more secrets to be revealed! When there wasn't a bunch of downtime happening this book was good. We got to see the relationships slowly develop between the characters and I liked that they weren't all instantly friends. The history that is there between what the prince and his dragons are with what they mean to Alora is definitely something that has to be overcome and not just swept under the rug....just a bit quicker though and it'd be perfection!

As for the spice, this book had zero spice in it. There were moments when I thought that these two were going to be able to put aside their hangups for each other BUT. I am not upset that they didn't. They both are dealing with some serious trauma when it comes to physical relations with the opposite sex. Since they are so long lived, this isn't like a few years type of trauma. We're talking hundreds of years. As they both gain trust in each other, and begin to heal the others wounds. I think that they will definitely progress to that point. For now, though. This is a definite 1 on the spice scale. Overall though, I give this book a 3. If there was a little less, downtime and little more action then it would be perfect. The action doesn't even have to be fights, it just needs to be story progression. I was very bogged down by the feeling of nothing happening. I would still recommend this book. If you are willing to get through some slow moments and enjoy the overarching story, then I think this (hopefully) will be worth the read for you.
