Ancients - ARC Review

I was not thinking that this book was going to be what it was. Honestly, I'm surprised that I was able to finish this. It feels almost ant-everything that I loved about this author's previous releases. Maybe I've just been steeped in the dark reads for too long or something. This book gave off a kind of self hatred that was almost an instant turn off. Sarah, our FMC, is a vampire who hates drinking blood. So she pretty much walks around half starved for most of the time we see her. So, I'm going to pause and explain why this was an issue for me. So, she proves within a short while that she can feed without harming people because she lets a man go that she was feeding on. WIthout him being any wiser to the situation. Already, she has given herself a solution to the issue. She doesn't want to kill people and we see that she doesn't HAVE to. Instead, she barely takes what she needs and continues on half starved and drinking cold blood. You'd think she'd realize that allowing herself to walk around half starved would make her more dangerous than just feeding fully off of multiple people. I understand that she has trauma from abusive parents but ma'am, figure out a solution that you can live with. Instead she half hates herself for most of the book and we get the whole internal monologue of it. Next thing is she's living in a house with her ex and his next. That was such a weird situation. Like, it was giving frat house. So then we meet David, our MMC. While he is not one to self hate, he is one to lay around and let folks beat him up. Once you find out what David and Sarah actually are, it makes their whole thing that much worse in my opinion. Like, I understand the whole, just because you have power don't abuse it, idea BUT not to the expense of bodily harm. So, after we get a history lesson on them and what they are and how we got to where we are....I was just....not happy. I don't know, maybe I'm chaotic at heart but, I fully embrace the whole I'm nice until you push me mantra. They are on the "oh no you pushed me, just don't hurt me too bad" train. It was not what I was expecting at all.

This book is full on angst like you wouldn't believe. The whole fact that neither one of them were commiting to doing something about the tension and almost moments between them was about to drive me up the wall. When they actually finally got together, I not only didn't care anymore, I actually skipped the whole thing.  1 out of 5 for the spice. The reasoning behind why David wouldn't do anything with Sarah was silly and felt thrown in there just to explain why things didn't happen before. Overall, I give this book a 3 out of 5. It just had such a different vibe then what I thought was going to happen in this story. I felt like a lot of the things that happened didn't have a truly valid reason for them happening. Some of the explanations that were given for the actions of some of the characters felt insufficient. This story just wasn't for me. Don't let that stop you from reading it though. I'm more than likely just a deviant. I think, if you're looking for soft, angsty almost YA vibes from your PNR then this is definitely the book for you.
