On Wings of Blood - Review
This book left me feeling strange. I liked the plot of the story....I didn't read the series before so Meedra is new to me. I liked how she's coming into this world and has to learn kinda on the run and while she finds some similarities with her world, she also is walking in blind to a whole different society. So we are learning with her. This world is kinda trash...or maybe it's just this country but it's very trash. The vamps essentially have the humans worship them and they can do literally anything to them with impunity. At the same time they need them since they have the blood that nourishes them. For some reason, we kinda get a hint of what it might actually be, the people here don't really question anything and just literally suffer through life as bottom tier people. I mean there are kids begging on the streets, people randomly dying, and getting sacrificed while the vamps are just like...whoops. There doesn't really seem to be any kind of checks and balances unless it is vamp against vamp. Then comes the dragons. Of course our FMC is a dragon rider in a world with no dragons. So that made things interesting. She was out of place in more ways than one. Meedra kinda comes in and immediately shakes things up. She is forcing the people to question whether this is really what they think they deserve and want for their lives. Being essentially cattle for the vampires is no way to live. This really intrigued me and I wanted to see more of what could happen. Then came the downsides. Meedra is ANNOYING. I'm sure I've met other annoying FMCs but MY GOODNESS. I mean this girl acts like she doesn't realize she is in another realm from what she's used to. The privilege that came with being a Princess in her world seems to cloud her mind. While she is right about a lot of things in terms of how the humans in this world should want to be treated she's also a walking idiot on a stick. Like how she constantly gets caught thinking that she's hiding from a vampire. Like when she naively thinks the best of these people when they have already clearly shown her that they are trash. Then the people who might have a little complexity she just throws the towel as evil. It's a strange decision to make. There was a lot of deep sighs and OMGs happening when I was reading the things from her POV. I won't let Blake get off without some criticism as well though. He was just as annoying. He is a literal walking miscommunication trope. Like OPEN YOUR MOUTH and speak. He just takes whatever decision Meedra makes instead of talking to her. Even though he literally states that he knows she's probably thinking the worst of him. Like SIR PLEASSSSSEEEE. I guess they are just gonna have to let the lust take over and find out the rest later because both of them are quite dense.
There wasn't really any spice in this book. The characters are both still in enemy territory and have not advanced to lovers. Though there was some petting. 1 out of 5 for the spice. Overall, I am on the fence with this book. There is a part of me that wants to continue reading this series because I'm curious how certain things are going to go but on the other hand Meedra gets on my LAST nerves. She is tolerable when she's hanging with her friends but then she'll do something silly like, steal a book from her super observant teacher who caught her trying to take the book and think he wouldn't notice when she actually did take it --..--. Idk, it's the wildest form of ignorance I've seen in awhile. It might just be a minute before I read the next one. I was super excited at the beginning, this book gives Isekai (for my anime watchers). Instead of getting taken out by truck-kun, Meedra was taken out by mountain-kun. Um...I guess if you love vampire stories and isekai moments then you would like this. Just be prepared for many eye rolls, deep sighs and putting your book down to stare off randomly into space wondering what the actual hell these characters are thinking.
