Lady of Darkness - Review

Well, I definitely spent all day listening to this in audiobook form. I was very hooked and very interested to see how this was going to workout. From meeting Soren in the first few pages to Callen trying to get closer to Scarlett after finding out who she actually is. Everything in this book was interesting! Now there were some lows that I want to get into before I begin spouting off how I almost instantly started book 2. So, Scarlett, is a powerful woman who is out here torturing and killing people in some creative ways...and by people I mean Fae. So imagine my surprise when she is constantly taking Ls in fights and really only wins a hand to hand with her sister. I really dislike when stories TELL us about a character and how amazing they are but then proceed to contradict that with every paragraph that we read. Like, you shouldn't have to repeatedly tell me how scary someone is in their world. I want to see it and believe it. As it stands, it almost seems like Scarlett is only formidable when she is with her sisters. Next thing is, Scarlett being wishy washy. Like....someone is able to change her mind about someone else in like one conversation. Like she doesn't have a mind of her own. As someone who is an assassin and dabbles in darkness, you would think that she would be able to have some type of discernment when it comes to people and their characters. So the fact that she immediately turns on one of the characters after spending MONTHS getting to know them was wild. I couldn't believe that she was turned so quickly against someone which makes me think that she doesn't trust her own decision making when it comes to other people. Which again ties into my whole dislike of being told how strong she is but never actually seeing it in action. Anyway, off of the dislikes, we move onto the likes. I really like this world. There are so many questions that I have about some of the things that went down that I know will be answered later. I'm looking forward to seeing Scarlett learn more about herself now that they are in a new location. Might not be a safer one but it is a new one that she might be slightly more safe in? The characters in this story are also very well done. The people you don't like, you know why you don't like them. The others that you do like, have their quirks and are all characters that you will remember.

There is no spice in this book really. There are scenes with Scarlett with people who aren't Soren but they aren't descriptive because why would we want to have that with her and others when we know Soren is her person? I definitely look forward to them getting their moment and I hope it's all that we can ask for when it does happen. Until then this gets a 0 on the spice scale. Overall, I enjoyed this book despite there being some issues with me believing that Scarlett really is that girl. I did still give this a 4 out of 5 because I am excited about the book and look forward to the next one in the series. I would recommend this to anyone who likes enemies to lovers and fantasy worlds with all types of creatures.
